EWME 2016 Social Dinner – HMS Warrior

The EWME 2016 Social Dinner will take place on the evening of Thursday 12th May and be held upon HMS Warrior, the world’s first modern battleship combining an iron hull and steam machinery. She was the fastest and most heavily armoured ship of her day, launched in 1860. However such was the pace of Victorian technology she was obsolete by 1883 and hulked by 1900.

Now set in the heart of Portsmouth’s Historic Dockyard, Warrior offers an imposing sight. As you step on board this sleek, black battleship you enter another world - the world of the Victorian sailor.

There will be an opportunity to wander the decks and have guided tours of the various apartments of the ship. Staff will be on hand to explain how the ship and her crew functioned and how HMS Warrior set the standard for the then ‘modern’ Royal Navy.

The Massive Gun Deck, the fighting citadel of the ship, is an ideal setting for guests to enjoy the meal. Delegates take dinner on this Gun Deck in unique surroundings, absorbing the 1860 atmosphere where six hundred Victorian sailors worked, ate and slept. Dining at mess tables between the broadside guns with their firing equipment overhead and close-quarter fighting arms alongside we hope that you enjoy this unique venue.

The social dinner venue is within a working military establishment. Due to security and access notification requirements the cut off for registration for attendance at the Social Dinner will be 2nd May. Any conference registrations received after this date will be charged at the full rate but will not include attendance at the Social Event.
